Roswell Derby, Jr.
frontis photograph Rosewell Derby, Jr. "was born about three miles southwest of Delta, Fulton County, Ohio, on February 4th, 1854. He grew up on a farm and was educated in a country school, Wauseon High and Elkhart, Indiana. He began teaching at 18. In the spring of 1877 was admitted to practice law at Goshen, Indiana. He was married on October first, 1880, to Ella Frances Grumman, at Berlinville, Erie County, Ohio. He has a family of three sons and two daughters He is now engaged in the law and real estate, together with his son, Kenneth, at Lorain, Ohio . . . ." ["Preface," by the author, Poems of Friendship Love and Hope (Boston: The Gorham Press, 1917)] [A short entry in William Coyle (ed.), Ohio Authors and Their Books: Biographical Data and Selective Bibliographies for Ohio Authors, Native and Resident, 1796-1950 167 (Cleveland: World Publishing Co., for the Ohioana Library Association, 1962) provides, by way of additional information, that Derby died on October 28, 1927. In [Thomas William Herringshaw, Herringshaw's Encyclopedia of American Biography of the Nineteenth Century (Chicago: American Publishers' Assoc., 1898), the bio entry indicates that Derby was admitted to the bar in Ohio where he was secretary and attorney for the People's Mutal Life Insurance Co., of Wakeman, Ohio. That bio further notes that "[f]or many years he was engaged in seed growing at Florence, Ohio, and was also a successful manufactuer of maple syrup."] Poetry
