archetypes & the collective unconscious
Preface

Jung uses the term collective unconscious "to convey
the idea that the human being contains psychic materials whose reality
is prior to the fact of individuality. The 'collective' refers
to a level of psychic contents that is deeper than, prior to, and more
fundamental than the individual personality. . . . It is collective
. . . in the sense that as something generically present in man,
it is collectively held by all men. . . . [The materials of the collective
unconscious] are present in potentia because they are inherent
in the psychic structure of the individual, from both a biological and
an historical point of view, and in the course of the individual's life,
depending on his experiences, some of them will be actualized and developed
on the surface of consciousness."

53-54 (New York: Grove Press, 1953)
"[W]e have little choice but to continue to link
the merely personal with the archetypal, to find what ancient rhythms
course with us . . . ."
--James Hollis, The Archetypal Imagination 100 (College Station,
Texas: Texas A&M Press, 2000)
"[James] Hillman proposed a modification of the term
'archetypal,' giving priority to its adjectival aspect [in the term,
archetypal psychology] rather than to use the use of 'archetype' as
a noun. We should now consider the archetype as a value, an attribute,
a quality of the image. To consider the notion of 'archetypal' from
this perspective means to renounce any attempt at possessing a previously
established list of archetypal or non-archetypal images, as well an
any attempt at having an a priori and universalized meaning
that already exists, such as those in a dictionary of symbols."
