Daniel Ricketson was born at New Bedford, Massachusetts on July 30, 1813 and lived the remainder of his life in New Bedford. Kunitz & Haycraft note that "[t]here is little information concerning his early education except that he studied law and gave up the idea of entering the profession to enjoy the literary and political pursuits made possible by the security of his personal fortune."
