Sidney Sparrow practiced law in Queens County, New York, some forty years of it, with his son, a fellow lawyer/poet, Robert E. Sparrow. Sparrow died on Debruary 27, 2005, at the age of 92, the day after Robert's 70th birthday. Sparrow's daughter, Joyce Sparrow, became a Family Court judge.

Sparrow was a lawyer for 69 years, and was, according to his son, known as the "Dean" of the criminal bar in Queens Count. He tried many high profile cases, including the defense of Winston Moseley, the alleged killer of Kitty Genovese, a 1964 case that attrcted nationwide publicity. (Robert E. Sparrow, Sidney Sparrow's son, informs us by letter dated October 12, 2005, that a documentary about the case is now being made.)

Sparrow was not only a poet and writer, but an athlete, a pilot, and a scuba diver. His family had inscribed on his headstone: Renaissance Man.
