Nathan A. Woodward was born on March 9, 1818, at Fairfax, Virginia. His parents moved to Monroe County, New York in 1824. Woodward graduated from Union College in 1845 and then taught school for four or five years while reading law. He was admitted to the bar in 1848 and began law practice at Batavia, New York. He served as county treasurer in 1882 and was a delegate to the state constitutional convention.
