John Akers Allen "Mr. Allen was born in Utica, N.Y., August 4, 1842. He came to Burlington, and fitted for college at Burlington High School. He graduated from University of Vermont in 1862. Admitted to the bar, he practised law in New York Sate, and was Asst. Dist. Attorney, 1866-73; Assemblyman, 1874; U.S. Supervisor of Elections, 1874-93; U.S. Commissioner, 1874-99; and was Master In Chancery, 1874. Columbia conferred on him an L.L.B. in 1866."
