Carlos C. Ashley Texas Poet Laureate from 1949-1951 Carlos Ashley grew up in the San Saba country, a fourth-generation Texas Hill Country rancher. He practiced law in Llano, Texas and served in the Texas State Senate, as a District Attorney and First Assistant Attorney General of Texas, and president of various local bar associations. Ashley was a graduate of Texas Christian University.
