Frederick Ayer was born at Lowell, Massachusetts, September 12, 1851, in Lowell, Massachusetts, the son of James C. Ayer, the founder of a proprietary medicine firm. He graduated from Harvard in 1873 and thereafter undertook the management of his father's estate upon his father's death in 1878. He maintained an office in New York City.
