"A son of Joseph and Sarah (Robbins) Battell, he was born at Norfolk, Connecticut, Nov. 28, 1807. Preparing at Lenox and Granville, Conn., he graduated from Middlebury College, 1826; studied law at Yale; was admitted to the bar, 1829; practiced in Connecticut, 1829-33; at Cleveland, Ohio, 1833-8; and at Middlebury, Vt., 1838-97. He married Emma (a niece of Horatio) Seymour in 1836. Died at Middlebury Dec. 1, 1897."
