Philip Battell "A son of Joseph and Sarah (Robbins) Battell, he was born at Norfolk, Connecticut, Nov. 28, 1807. Preparing at Lenox and Granville, Conn., he graduated from Middlebury College, 1826; studied law at Yale; was admitted to the bar, 1829; practiced in Connecticut, 1829-33; at Cleveland, Ohio, 1833-8; and at Middlebury, Vt., 1838-97. He married Emma (a niece of Horatio) Seymour in 1836. Died at Middlebury Dec. 1, 1897."
