George Bennett

(1824-    )
Ireland & Oregon

"Bennett, George.—Born October 23, 1824, at Bandon, Co. Cork, and graduated at Trinity College, Dublin. He proceeded to the Bar, and in 1861 published his well known 'History of Bandon' . . . . In 1873 he emigrated to the States, and settled in Oregon, at the mouth of Coquille River, where now stands the town of Bandon. The name was twice changed by bigots, but Mr. Bennett did not rest till he got an act passed fixing the name as Bandon. He has written various poems, chiefly in praise of the town and its surroundings, in the newspapers of Oregon."
