Norman Williams Bingham "Born in Derby, May 19, 1829, he acquired early local reputation as a poet. Educated in the academies at Derby and St. Johnsbury, he studied law at Irasburgh and was appointed Clerk of Orleans County Court, 1855, becoming ex-offico Clerk of the Supreme Court of the State. [I]n June, 1861, he became Deputy Collector of Customs at Island Pond. He was alternate to the convention that nominated Lincoln in 1860; held several offices of trust under the State and Nation during the Civil War; was Special Agent of the United States Treasury, 1866; and in 1869 was placed in charge of the Customs Revenue District of New England with headquarters at Boston, holding this position till 1885. Residing at Somerville, Mass., he served on the School Board there for thirteen years. As a lawyer he was widely employed in cases relating to customs laws and regulations. He published a biography of Hon. Timothy Hinman, with a genealogy; also an 'Address Delivered Before the Orleans Historical Society,' 1891; and in 1902 appeared his 'Rollicking Rhymes of Old and New Times.' He died in Somerville, Mass., Feb. 23, 1905."
