John Coalter

(1769-1838)

"John Coalter was tutor, attended lectures at College of William and Mary under Bp. James Madison and George Wythe and studied law under St. George Tucker. He was a lawyer and clerk of the court in Staunton, Va. Appointed judge of the Circuit Court, and served as judge of the Virginia General Court. When Coalter was appointed judge of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, he moved to Richmond. Coalter was married four times, to Maria Rind, Margaret Davenport, Frances Bland Tucker and to a widow, Hannah (Jones) Williamson. He died in 1838."
