"Judge Darling, a prominent laywer of Burlington, Vt., was born at Woodstock May 9, 1859. He graduated from Tufts College, 1884; married Agnes C. Norton of Bennington, 1889; admitted to bar, 1886; represented Bennington in the state legislature, 1896-7; was Asst. Sec. of the Navy, 1901-5; has held many other offices of trust, both public and private, and is a prominent Mason. . . . He lives in Burlington."

Darling graduated from Montpelier Seminary in 1880 before he attended Tufts College. He studied law with Norman Paul at Woodstock and took up the practice of law in 1886 in Bennington. He was apponted judge of the Municipal Court by Governor Ormsbee in 1887, a position he held until 1901. He was elected President of the village in 1895. In 1896, the year he served in the legislature he formed a partnership with O.M. Barber for the practice of law. He was elected president of the Vermont Bar Association in 1900.
