Howell Stroud England frontis photograph Howell Stroud England was a biologist, as well as an attorney. He was born in Philadelphia, on August 21, 1864, the son of James and Sarah (Stroud) England. He attended Friend School in Wilmington, Delaware and Westtown Boarding School in Pennsylvania. He received his A.B. degree in 1888 and his A.M. degree in 1890 from Haverford College. His poetry was anthologized in Modern American Poetry (1935)(1936), Modern Troubadors (1936), American States (1936), Yearbook of Contemporary Poetry (1936), Paebar (1937), Contemporary American Men Poets (1937), Christmas Lyrics (1937), Verseland (1937). England was a member of the Wayne County and Michigan State Bar Associations, and the Detroit Historical Society, Michigan Academy of Arts and Letters, Michigan Author's Association, and served as president of the Detroit Chapter of the National Lawyer's Guild. He died March 21, 1938 in Detroit.
