William Prescott Foster "Foster, William Prescott, lawyer, poet. He is a successful lawyer of Bar Harbor, Maine; and the author of a number of meritorious poems." [Thomas William Herringshaw, Herringshaw's Encyclopedia of American Biography of the Nineteenth Century 376 (Chicago: American Publishers' Assoc., 1898)] William Foster was born at Weld, Franklin County, Maine on Agust 20, 1856. He graduated from Bates College in 1881. His poems appeared in the Atlantic Monthly and the Century magazines, and in Younger American Poets, 1830-1890. [online text] From the General Catalogue of Officers and Graduates of Bates College (Lewiston, Maine, 1893), we find that Foster: "Fitted for college at Nichols Latin Sch., Lewiston, Me. Prin. Grammar Sch., Lanesboro, Mass., 1881-82. Prin. High Scho., Camden, Me., 1882-83; ditto Ellsworth, Me., 1883-84. Studied law with Hon. Enoch Foster, Bethel Me., 1884-86. Lawyer, Bar Harbor, Me., 1886--. Elected trustee of Bar Harbor Bankinng and Trust Co., Nov., 1889. Has contributed poems to Century and Lippincott's. m. Ruby A. Hinckley, June 16, 1886; one son and one daughter." [online text] Foster moved from Bar Harbor, Maine to Boston where he also practiced law. |
