William Dudley Foulke

His father was a minister of the Society of Friends and principal of Friends Seminary in New York City. Foulke attended Friends Seminary, graduated in 1863, received his A.B. degree from Columbia University in 1869 and his law degree from Columbia in 1871. He took up the practice of law in New York City the year he graduated. Foulke practiced law in New York City until 1876 when he moved to Richmond, Indiana, the home town of his wife, Mary Taylor Reeves. From 1883 to 1885 he served as a member of the Indiana State Senate. In 1890 Foulke gave up the practice of law and focused his attentions on "reform movements, journalism, traveling, and literature." Foulke's involvement in the newspaper business came initially as part owner of the Richmond Palladium, and then serving for several months as the paper's editor. From 1909 to 1912 he became an owner and editor of the Richmond Item. [Source: Arthur W.
