Samuel Jenkins Hay

"Hay, Samuel Jenkins, lawyer, jurist, poet, was born Nov. 23, 1825, near Barnwell, S. C. He graduated from Erskine college of South Carolina. He studied law under his distinguished kinsman, Governor Charles J. Jenkins of Georgia; and for many years practiced law in Augusta, Ga. After his marriage he settled in Barnwell, S.C., where he practiced law until his death. In 1865 he was elected district judge; and subsequently for many years was probate judge. He was the author of several fine poems. He died June 14, 1881, in Barnwell, S.C."
