William Houswerth was born at Selingsgrove, Pennsylvania on November 7, 1853. "At an early age William learned the printers' trade, but abandoned it and followed the profession of school teaching for about twelve years. In 1878 Mr. Houswerth commenced the study of law and was admitted to the bar two years later. In 1885 he was honored with a teachers' permanent certificate, and is now engaged in the practice of the law and in literary work in his native town. Mr. Houswerth is known in central Pennsylvania as the Bard of the Susquehanna."
