Jonathan Lawrence "was born in New York, in November, 1807, and, after the usual preparatory studies, entered Columbia College, at which he was graduated before he was fifteen years of age. He soon after became a student in the office of Mr. W. Slosson, an eminent lawyer . . . . On being admitted to the bar, he entered into a partnership with Mr. Slosson . . .
