Robert Loveman was born on April 11, 1864 in Cleveland, Ohio. The family, in the year following Loverman's birth, moved to Dalton, Georgia. Loveman grew up in Dalton, studied law at the University of Alabama, and was admitted to the bar. He reputedly spent most of his time reading and writing poetry. [Source: Guide to the Robert Loveman Papers, W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library, University of Alabama] [According to one source, Loveman read law for three years in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.]

In one biographical account of Loveman's life we find this assessment of Loveman's career as a lawyer: "It is doubtful whether Loveman ever had a client, although he did have some business cards printed wthich read 'Robert Loveman, Attorney at Law, Birmingham, Alabama.'" [William Stanley Hoole, It's Raining Violets: The Life and Poetry of Robert Loveman 20 (University, Alabama: Portals Press, 1981)]
