Raymond McCarty Raymond McCarty was born on a farm near Ottumwa, Iowa. He attended Southwest Missouri State Teachers College, Southern Law University in Memphis, and Memphis State University. He received his law degree in 1948, was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in that same year and took up the practice of law in Tennessee, which he pursued from 1953 until his retirement in 1972. He was employed by the Corps of Engineers in the real estate division. McCarty was a member of various poetry societies, including the Poetry Society of Tennessee which he helped found and serve as the organization's first president. McCarty was named Poet Laureate of the Poetry Society of Tennessee for 1977-1978. He received the Countess d'Esternaux Gold Medal Award for Poetry in 1950 and the World Poetry Society Intercontinental Distinguished Citation for Poetry in 1970.
