"Searl, Fernando Cortez (July 18, 1825-June 26, 1904), lawyer, was born on a farm in Vernon Township, Scioto County, [Ohio]. After attending district schools, he began teaching at the age of sixteen. In 1859 he settled in Portsmouth, where he read law, was admitted to the bar in 1863, and served for a time as probate judge. He practiced law in Portsmouth and operated several farms in the surrounding area."
