Strangers to Us All Lawyers and Poetry

Rodney K. Shaw

(1829- )
Ohio

"Rodney K. Shaw was born in Denmark, Lewis County, New York, December 13th, 1829. As a boy he worked on the farm and not until he reached his majority did he have opportunity for an academic training, which he received in the Union and Loweville academies of his native state. He spent some time as a teacher in New York, Virginia, and Mississippi. While following this profession he studied law and was admitted to practice in the New York Courts in 1855. In 1859 he came to Parkersburg, Virginia [now West Virginia], and the following year entered a law office at Marietta, Ohio. At the beginning of the war he organized a company of volunteers, which became a part of the Sixty-Third Ohio Regiment, one of the best regiments in the Civil War. On account of disability he left the service and resumed his profession. Mr. Shaw has fine literary taste and his poetry shows keen ability. . . ."
