Henry Timrod Henry Timrod was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He attended Franklin College (now part of the University of Georgia). "Timrod was admitted to the bar but had neither the health or the temperament for vigorous practice." [Bruce R. McElderry, Jr., The Realistic Movement in American Writing 516 (New York: Odyssey Press, 1965]. Failing to secure a university teaching position, Timrod worked as tutor. He served in the Confederate Army as a clerk and after the war as a correspondent for the Charleston Mercury and in 1864 became editor of the Columbia South Carolinian. Timrod's poetry is included in most of the historical anthologies of American poetry. He is buried next in the graveyard of Trinity Church in Columbia, South Carolina. Henry
