Gershom Mott Williams

"Williams, Gershom Mott, first Protestant Episcopal bishop of Marquette, was born at Fort Hamilton, New York harbor, Feb. 11, 1857 . . . . He was educated in the Newburg Free Academy, and at Cornell University, 1875-77, and at the age of sixteen entered the employ of the Newburg Steam Engine works. He studied law at Detroit, Mich., and after being admitted to the bar in 1879, practiced for a year. Leaving the law for the ministry, he became curate of St. John's Protestant Episcopal Church of Detroit in 1880. He was rector of the Church of the Messiah, 1882-84, and of St. George's Church, 1884-89, and in 1889 he became dean of All Saints' Cathedral, Milwaukee, Wis. On Oct 1, 1891 he was appointed archdeacon of northern Michigan, and on Nov. 14, 1895 he was chosen bishop of Marquette, Mich. . . . He has published occasional sermons, essays, and poems . . . ."
